    Andre Rieu was born to a father who was a musical conductor, in 1949 in Maastricht, Netherlands. By the age of the five, the young boy began honing his own musical talents and started playing the violin, where he eventually excelled. He later studied at the Conservatoire Royal and the Conservatoriium Maastricht. In the mid-to-late 1970’s he even studied under the great Andre Gertler at the Music Academy, where he was honored with the Premier Prix.

  • Rieu would later be known as the “King of Waltz.” His appreciation for the waltz came after he performed Franz Lehar’s “Gold and Silver waltz” while at university. The audience absolutely loved it and it became addictive to him as well. He later founded the Masstricht Salon Orchestra and played the violin in the Limburg Symphony Orchestra.

    Toward the end of the 1980’s Rieu started the Johann Strauss Orchestra. It is the muscial group that he is most noted and celebrated for. He is also given the distinction of reviving the waltz music. While he has received a substantial amount of praise and has sold millions of albums, he still has his share of detractors. Most of the backlash includes criticisms of him playing for and being immersed in popular culture, and being accepted by mainstream audiences.

    The Johann Strauss Orchestra started out rather small, with only twelve musicians. Today, it has up to fifty playing members at any one time. The Orchestra has sinced played all over the world including North America, Europe and Japan.

    The orchestra has won two World Music Awards and has sold millions of records, especially in Rieu’s native country of the Netherlands. Although Rieu is most well known for waltz music, he and his orchestra also play folk and popular music. His talent isn’t just captured on albums or CD’s, he also has recorded several concerts on DVD.
