The group’s debut album was titiled Something About Airplanes and released in 1998. The album was well received. They followed up their debut with We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes. It was during this time, that the band first changed personnell. Drummer, Nathan Good, left the group, while the album was being recorded. They kept two of his songs, but Ben Gibbard finished out the album. Michael Schorr ended up replacing him. The new group recorded The Forbidden love E.P. (2000), The Photo Album (2001) and The Stability E.P. Two years later in 2003, the band saw more change. Jason McGerr became the drumming replacement for Schoor and became the drummer on the band’s 2003 album, Transatlanticism. Songs from this record appeared on a number of TV and movie soundtracks.

The next year, the band signed a major record deal with Atlantic Records. While there had been some scepticism of big record deals in the past, the band went ahead and took the plunge. They did however, encourage their fans to purchase their songs online.

The next album the band released was titled Plans in 2005. It received a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album that year. It also sold more then 500,000 records and stayed on the Billboard charts for nearly fifty weeks. In 2006, the band performed songs from that album on Saturday Night Live. During this time, the band also recorded their tour and sold it via a DVD. It was titled, Drive Well, Sleep Carefully.
