    Erica Abi Wright was born on February 26, 1971in South Dallas, Texas, but is far better known by her show or stage name which is Erykah Badu. Her and her siblings were raised by their single mother, and their grandmother. The grandmother had to take over when their mother, Kollen Maria Gipson, performed as an actress at many local theaters. Erykah was heavily influenced by her mother's acting, and it didn't take long for her to get into the business of show-biz. By age 4, she was dancing and singing along with her mother at

    Erykah's debut album finally came in 1997, after much hard work, and was entitled Baduizm. It debuted on #2 of the billboard charts, and went double platinum, and the lead single "On & On", made it to #12 on the US and UK charts respectively. The songs won a couple of Grammy Awards in 1998, and she was hailed as a leader in the up-and-coming neo soul genre. Her next album, Live, was released as her first child, Seven, was born. This album when double platinum, and reached #4 on the billboard charts. In 2000, she released Mama's Gun, which went platinum, as well. Having a bad case of writer's block, Erykah toured from 2002 to 2003, and after that she produced the Worldwide Underground EP, which went to #4 on the billboard charts, and got her four more Grammy nominations.
