Buy Greatful Dead Tickets The Grateful Dead are an American Rock Band originally from the San Francisco Bay area. The band was formed in 1965 and it’s original members were Jerry Garcia (lead guitar), Phil Lesh (bass guitar), Bob Weir (rhythm guitar), Bill Kreutzmann (drums) and Ron McKernan (keyboards, harmonica and vocals).
Originally called ‘The Warlocks’, the band had to change their name as another band started recording under that name. The Grateful Dead started off playing live shows at Kepler’s Books in Manlo Park, California. Their music combined elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, country and jazz and they became well known for their live improvisation. -
Ron McKernan played with the band until shortly before he died in 1973 aged only 27. Since then various members have joined and left the band throughout the years. Among these include second drummer, Mickey Hart, who was a member from 1967 to 1971 and then rejoined in 1974. Tom Constanten was the band’s second keyboardist from 1968 to 1970 and was followed by Keith Godchaux on keyboards from 1971 to 1979. Keith’s wife Donna joined the band to sing backing vocals from 1972 to 1979.
11 members of the band joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. In 1995, Jerry Garcia died and the group disbanded. Eventually they re-joined under the name ‘The Dead’ leaving out the word ‘Grateful’ as respect to Garcia.
The Grateful Dead were named No. 55 on the ‘100 Greatest Artists of All Time‘ by Rolling Stone magazine. They have a huge following and fans of the band are known as ‘Deadheads’, many have followed the band for years.
More recently, the band received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. They performed to show support for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and are to tour again in 2009.
