Jay Z Tickets Rapper Jay-Z was born Shauna Corey Carter in 1969. He was once the CEO and president of Def Jam records. In addition to being a rapper, he is also an entrepreneur who is part owner of the New Jersey's Net, a member of the National Basketball Association and also of the 40/40 club, an upscale sports bar. He is one the most legendary and successful rap artists, entrepreneurs in the United States.
Jay-Z helped found Rockefeller records with Damon Dash and Kareem Burks. He went on to -
sell his portion of the company. Jay-Z has been quite successful. Over his career he has made some very wise business dealings and is believed to have a net worth of $600 million.
Jay-Z has retired a more than once as a rapper. In 2003, when he first retired, he backtracked and three years later released the album, Kingdom Come, which moved an impressive, 680,000 copies the first week of its release.
Jay-Z has plans to be the headline artist for Glastonbury Festivals and also the Hova Festival, which will take place in Norway in June of 2008.
Jay-Z was raised by Brooklyn, New York in a housing project, called Marcy Houses. His father left the family when he was 12 years old. He began taking an interest in music when his mom bought him a boombox as a young kid. He was known around the neighborhood is Jazzy, which later turned to Jay-Z when he became a professional recording artist. Jay-Z’s first record was titled, Reasonable Doubt. It came out in 1996. He released it on his own recording label because he wasn't able to get anyone to sign him. He made a deal with Priority to distribute his material. The album was a pretty decent success and reached 23 on the Billboard 200 charts, which was quite impressive for someone who started their own label just to release their music. The album received a great deal of critical praise.
In 1997, Rockefeller records sold a 50% the share of the company to Def Jam Records for $1.5 dollars. In 2004, the three men who founded Rockefeller Records sold the rest of the label. This is rumored to be due to differences in creative directio between Jay-Z and Damon Dash. Besides music and the 40/40 club, Jay-Z also created an urban clothing line that he eventually sold to Iconic Spring Group for $200 million.
