Buy John Mellencamp Oklahoma City Tickets Born on October 7, 1951 in Seymour, Indiana, John Mellencamp, also known as John Cougar or John Cougar Mellencamp, has become a staple in the American rock scene. This 56 year old artist has been releasing albums since 1976, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2008.
His hits "Hurts So Good" and "Jack and Diane" from his breakthrough album "American Fool" propelled John onto the music scene in 1982. "Hurts So Good" spent 19 week in the Top Ten, -
which is more than any other single released in the decade. "Jack and Diane" remains his only song to have ever made the Billboard Top 100. The album was released at the time that his record company was still using the fake surname Cougar, but the fame generated by this album allowed John to force the record company to include his real surname on his next albums.
Under the name John Cougar Mellencamp, he went on to release popular, and enduring songs such as "Uh-Huh", "Crumblin' Down", "Authority Song", "R.O.C.K. In the U.S.A.", and "Check It Out". During his time under this name, he toured with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Dylan. With Bob Dylan, he also performed a duet of the classic, "Like a Rollin' Stone". They performed this duet at every show on the tour.
In 1991, John changed the name of which he released albums under yet again to just his real name, John Mellencamp. During the next couple of years he released rock albums that went back to the basics, with some track that did not even have bass in them, and some with just their first or second takes on the vocals.
In the summer of 1994, he suffered a heart attack due to his smoking habits, and had to cancel the rest of his tour. The album after his return, "Mr. Happy Go Lucky", was an attempt to fuse the current wave of hip-hop and electronic music into the rock 'n roll scene. This album contained John's last Top 40 song, "Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First)". As of late, John hasn't released anything notable, just a few covers, and protesting pieces.
Other than music, John has also appeared in a handful of movies like, "Falling From Grace", which he directed, and "Lone Star State of Mind". His acting career, though, has not taken off like his music career did.
