The height of Journey’s success was in the 1970s and 1980s. Songs such as “Wheel in the Sky,” “Open Arms” and “Don't Stop Believing,” were hits for the band. The group was founded in 1973 in San Francisco, California. It included some members who were once a part of Santana's band, including Greg Rolie and Neal Schon. The group originally wanted to be a backup band for various singers in the Bay Area. However, once they got together, they decided to create a front runner group of their own.

  • Journey’s initial albums were not very successful commercially. As a result, their record company, Columbia records, decided that they needed a lead singer, and that their style of music was not generating enough fan interest. Journey agreed and hired a lead singer. However, things didn't change much and the singer was fired in a year. Steve Perry was hired to take his place.

Perry seemed to be the voice that the band needed and Infinity, which was the band's fourth recording, finally hit the charts, landing at number 21 and went Platinum. Between 1981 and 1983 the group really took off. In 1981, Escape would sell nine million albums and hit number one on the charts. This was the album that would spawn the singles, “Don’t Stop Believing,” “Open Arms” and “Who’s Crying Now.” However, while the fans loved it, critics weren’t as kind and gave the group negative reviews. Not daunted, the group recorded and released Frontiers in 1983. This album went to number two on the charts. The group would work with the NFL to document there Frontiers and Beyond tour. After the album Frontiers dropped, the band began breaking up. The lead singer and guitarist both left to work on solo recordings. The bass player and the drummer were fired. Randy Jackson, who most people know today from American Idol, joined the group, as well as other musicians. Their next album would still be a success and go double Platinum.

Throughout the years and up until the present, the band has had different personnel, however they still continue to tour and make music. They have an album titled Revelation that is set to drop June 3. They also plan to go on tour to support the album.
