    Peter Gabriel is an English singer/songwriter most famous for his lead vocals as part of the band Genesis. Genesis were a progressive rock band which Gabriel founded in 1967. Gabriel’s flamboyant stage presence and bizarre outfits were well known but he left the band in 1975 to spend time with his family as his wife was ill at the time. Phil Collins eventually replaced him as the lead vocalist of Genesis. Peter Gabriel has become well known for his more recent interest in world music and his various humanitarian effort including his involvement in Live 8.

  • His first four solo albums were all self-titled and his debut single ‘Solsbury Hill’ directly referred to his departure from Genesis. In 1989, he released the album ‘Passion’ which provided the soundtrack to the movie ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’. For this soundtrack he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score - Movie.

    In 1992, he released the album ‘Us’. In 2000, he provided the soundtrack for the Millenium Dome Show in London. In 2002, he made ‘Long Walk Home’ another soundtrack. The album ‘Up’ was released in Sept that year and in 2008 he contributed to the WALL-E soundtrack.

    Gabriel is a lover of soul music and has been influenced by artists such as Otis Redding. He has worked with various other artists including U2 and Sinead O’Conner and has toured extensively. Peter Gabriel opened for David Bowie whilst on tour (1982-83). He has won three Grammy awards, all for his music videos which many would agree are ground-breaking.
