    The American, rock band, R.E.M. was formed in 1980 by Michaels Stipe on vocals, Bill Berry on drums and percussion, Mike Mills on bass guitar and Peter Buck also on guitar. R.E.M. music might best be described as alternative rock. The band is currently signed with the Warner Brothers I. R. S. label. The group does own their I. R. S. catalog

    The band’s first single was titled, “Radio Free Europe” and was released in 1981 by a small record label called Hib Tone. In 1983, the band

  • released their first album, Murmur, that which the critics loved. In 1988, the group signed with Warner Bros. records and saw good success with two albums released in the nineties. Automatic For the People was released in 1992 and Out of Time made its’ way to the public in 1991.

    In 1997, the group signed again with Warner Bros. for a whopping $80 million, which was one of the richest recording contracts in history at that time. In 1998 Bill Berry left the band. The three remaining members, Stype, Mills and Buck stayed on and they continued to a record as R.E.M.

    In 2006, the group released And I feel Fine: The Best of the I. R. S. years 1982-1987.. They also released a DVD titled When The Light Is Mine, The Best of the IRS years 1982 to 1987 at the same time. The group began working on their 14th album titled, Accelerate in 2007 with producer, Jackknife Lee. The group recorded and released their first live album, titled REM Live in October of 2007. The band was inducted into the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame that same year.

    R.E.M. is also a very socially active group and has supported a number of causes that have proven important to the band.
