    Summerfest is an annual music festival that is held in June and July and always encompasses the 4th July holiday. It’s location each year is the Henry Maier Festival Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

    The idea for Summerfest was conceived in the early 1960s by the mayor at the time, Henry W. Maier. He was inspired by the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany when he visited there. He wanted to recreate a similar sort of cultural festival in Milwaukee.

  • The first Summerfest was held in 1968 and was spread across 35 different locations around the city in order to make it accessible to as many people as possible. The second event was plagued by debt and a few years later race riots in the area threatened to end the annual festival. However, it did continue and a permanent, central location was settled on by the time 1970’s Summerfest came around. It continues to be held in that lakefront location to the present day.

    Covering several days and over 12 stages, Summerfest has seen the likes of Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Christina Aguilera and Mary J Blige. They now also have the 23,000 seat Marcus Amphitheater.
