In 1984, he set out to play music full-time and started playing in places like Texas and Oklahoma. He would also get married and would eventually have three kids, one who is a step-child. In 1993 Keith headed to Nashville, Tennessee to try to make his the dream of becoming a country singer a reality. He would pass out tapes, but there was no interest from record companies. The year, 2001 was a tough year personally for Keith. His father died and the country suffered through the September 11 attacks. To vent, Keith recorded and released a song called “Courtesy of the Red White and Blue: The Angry American.” It was a huge hit, however it wasn’t without controversy. Peter Jennings asked Keith to change some of the lyrics if he was to perform the song on ABC. Keith refused and the exchange became very public. Keith also got into a feud with the Dixie Chicks over the song. The Dixie Chicks claimed that the song was ignorant and made their genre of music sound ignorant. Keith countered by stating that Nathalie Maines songwriting abilities were poor. In 2003, Keith had enough of the feud and ended his side of it.
