Widespread Panic is an American rock n roll band. They are one of the hardest working bands in music, playing up to 200 gigs a year. They are also one of the more lucrative touring acts as well, as they routinely land in the top 50 of the most money earning tours. They are more of a grassroots band, and don’t receive a significant amount of radio play or promotion.

The band consists of Todd Nance on drums, Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz on percussions, John Bell on guitar and vocals, John “JoJo” Hermann

  • on keyboards, Dave Schools on bass and Jimmy Herring on guitar. One of the group’s founders Michael Houser, is no longer with the group, as he sadly died from pancreatic cancer in 2002. George McConnell later played lead guitar.

Widespread Panic has sold out a number of venues on a regular basis. These include the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre, which the band has sold out an amazing 17 shows and the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, which they have sold out 23 times.

Widespread Panic started out as a duo with Michael Houser and John Bell, though the group didn’t initially go by that name. For two years, the men played at and around the University of Georgia at Athens. The group became Widespread Panic in 1985 and added Dave Schools on bass and then a drummer as needed. Initially, most of their shows consisted of cover songs with a few songs that the band wrote themselves.

In 1986, Todd Nance was added to the band and Domingo S. Ortiz joined the band around 1989. The band initially signed with Landslide Records and released Space Wrangler, at John Keane.

The group later signed with Capricorn Records. They released Widespread Panic in the early 1990’s. John Hermann, joined the band shortly thereafter. In 1998, they recorded a live album titled, Light Fuse, Get Away. The band continued to grow in popularity and enjoyed a healthy concert following, especially in the Southeast, United States.

After Michael Houser died, George McConnell filled in as lead guitarist. The group recorded the album Ball, with him as the lead guitarist. In 2004, the band recorded three albums, though none of them were recorded in the studio, but instead live. In 2006, McConnell left the band. Jimmy Herring eventually replaced him. The band recorded their 10th album in February 2008. It was titled Free Somehow.
