The Arizona Cardinals are a professional football team in the National Football League. They were established in 1898. They are members of the NFL’s NFC West division. The team holds the distinction as being the longest running professional football team in America. They were originally called the Morgan Athletic Club and were based in Chicago, Illinois. After several name changes, they became the Chicago Cardinals and joined the NFL in 1920. They would later move to the St. Louis and become the St. Louis Cardinals.
-
Then finally in 1988, they moved to Arizona and become the Phoenix Cardinals. In 1994, the name was changed once again, to the Arizona Cardinals.
After the Cardinals moved to Arizona, they struggled to come up with the wins on the field. The club's fortune did change a bit in the late 1990’s. Jake Plummer, a quarterback from Arizona State University helped the team make the playoffs in 1998. They would go on to beat the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card game. This win secured the first playoff game victory for the Arizona Cardinals in many years. The Cardinals would lose to the Minnesota Vikings in the next round. Since 1998, the team has struggled mightily and hasn't been able to put together a winning season. 2007 was one of the best years for the Cardinals since the 1998 season. They won half of their games and finished with an 8-8 record. The team was led by former University of Southern California (USC) quarterback Matt Leinert and former Super Bowl MVP, Kurt Warner who took over when Leinert went down with an injury.
In 2003 the Cardinals built a new stadium. It is in Glendale, Arizona, which is a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona. It is a state of the art stadium that includes a retractable roof, grass and air-conditioning.
