The Atlanta Falcons are a professional football team that competes in the NFC South. They were established in 1966 and play their home games in Atlanta, Georgia. The Falcons have been winners of three divisional championships and have appeared in one Super Bowl.
The Atlanta Falcons have largely been an up-and-down team when it comes to winning in the National Football League. They did not experience their first winning season until 1971 and it wasn’t until 1978, that they secured their -
first playoff win against the Philadelphia Eagles.
In 1980, the Falcons made it to the divisional playoffs where they would lose to the Dallas Cowboys. In 1991 they made it to the playoffs again but would lose to the Washington Redskins. 1998 however was a great year for the Falcons. They featured Jamaal Anderson at running back and Chris Chandler at quarterback. The team was affectionally known as the, “The Dirty Birds.” The team would finish the regular season with only two losses and a 14-2 record. They would go on to be crowned the champions of the NFC West. In 1999, they faced the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC championship game. The Vikings were highly favored and had amassed a 15 -1 record for the year. The Falcons would beat the Vikings 32-27. They would go on to play and lose to the eventual Super Bowl winners, the Denver Broncos.
In 2001 the team would draft quarterback, Michael Vick, by way of a trade with the San Diego Chargers. He would go on to be the face of the franchise until 2007, when he was jailed on charges of dog fighting. Vick would lead the team to the playoffs a number of times. In 2004, he helped the team amass an 11-5 record. They made it to the conference championship game, but would lose to the Philadelphia in Eagles. The following year, they would go 8-8. In 2006, the team would go 7-9. Some questions begin to surface regarding whether or not Michael Vick was indeed a franchise quarterback. Many of these questions will never be answered since Michael Vick's is in prison. He may or may not return to the National Football League.
In 2007, Bobby Petrino quit as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons abruptly and surprisingly. He had only coached one year in the NFL. He was eventually replaced by Mike Smith, who previously was a defensive coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
