The Carolina Panthers are a professional football that was established in 1995. They currently are based in Charlotte, North Carolina and compete in the NFC South. The team joined the National Football League in 1995, the same year the Jackson Jaguars did.
In 1987 Charlotte, North Carolina acquired a NBA franchise and during this time, a group of individuals looked into the possibility of bringing in an NFL team. In 1993, the NFL granted the Carolina Panthers the right have an expansion -
team. This decision was met with a lot of excitement from the region.
The team's first coach was Dom Capers, who previously worked for the Pittsburgh Steelers as the defensive coordinator. The team's first game was against another expansion team, the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Panthers would win this game 20-14. This made them the first expansion team to win their first game.
Because the Panthers did not have a home stadium, they played their inaugural season at Clemson University. Although the team would finish 7-9, which is very respectable for an expansion franchise, there were some very good wins that season. They put together a string of four straight wins, which was a record for an expansion team, and they also beat the San Francisco 49er's who had won the previous year's Super Bowl.
The Panthers would continue to improve. In 1997, their second year in existence, they made it to the playoffs and won the NFC West. They would go on to beat the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the playoffs, but lost to the Green Bay Packers in their conference championship game. The Packers would go on to win the Super Bowl that year. In addition to having a great season, eight players were voted to the Pro Bowl.
The next year things would fall apart for the Panthers. Ray Carruth, a standout receiver for the team, was charged with conspiring to kill his girlfriend who was pregnant with his child. Quarterback Kerry Collins had an alcohol problem and was released the following year. Fred Lane who was a former running back with the team, was killed by his wife in 2000.
In 2003, the Panthers would make it to the playoffs by winning the NFC South. They beat the Cowboys in the first round and would go on to beat the St. Louis Rams in the second round. They would then face the Philadelphia Eagles in the league championship where they ended up winning to make it to their first Super Bowl. They would face the New England Patriots. Although the game was close, the Panthers would eventually lose. You do not want to miss out on your chance to see the Carolina Panthers live so order your tickets now from UltimateTicketHub.com.
