The Detroit Lions are a National Football League (NFL) member, that is based in Detroit, Michigan. The team was originally known as the Portsmouth Spartans and they represented Portsmouth, Ohio. The Spartans became a member of the NFL in 1930. Four years later, the team was moved to Detroit.
Perhaps the most notable player to play for the Detroit Lions was Barry Sanders. He retired prematurely after a contract dispute. He wanted out of Detroit but the Lions refused to let him -
out of his contract and so he retired. One of his most outstanding years took place in 1997, when he rushed for over 2000 yards. During that year, he also held the distinction of being second on the all-time rushing yards list, trailing only Walter Payton by a little over 1000 yards. He would end up among the National Football League’s, 50 best rushers and was the only one to average 5 yards per carry. Even though the team struggled while Barry Sanders was a member of it, the team's fortunes on the field seemed to get only worst after he retired. The good years for the Lions have been few and far between.
In 2000, the team went 9-7 but failed to make the playoffs. Between 2001 and 2003 the team didn't win a single road game. The Lions are the only team in the National Football League to have gone this long without winning on the road. Matt Millen was hired in 2001 to be CEO of the football team. Since his arrival, the team’s performance on the field has continued to plummet. The draft picks that he has been responsible for have largely been busts. Fans have called for his firing and have even staged a small walk out. Millen however received a five-year extension in 2005. 2007 looked like it was going to be a promising one for the Detroit Lions as they begin the season with a 6-2 record. They finished extremely poorly, going 1-7 and ended up with a losing record to miss the playoffs.
