The Jacksonville Jaguars and the Carolina Panthers were the first expansion teams in almost 20 years. The Jaguars finished their first season 4-12. Their second season got even better when they won six of their last seven games to finish with a 9-7 record. By their third year, they had an impressive 11-5 win record. They made the playoffs for the second year as a wild-card team in their only three seasons of existence. By 1999 they had posted a record of 14-2, giving them the best record in their franchise’s history. The Jaguar’s had been to the playoffs three of their first four years as an expansion franchise. They were the first expansion team to do so.
In 2007, the team posted their first playoff win in seven years, beating the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road. They would lose in the next round when they took on the Super Bowl runner ups, the New England Patriots. The Jaguars also made a move in 2007 that shocked outsiders when they announced that backup quarterback David Garrard would take over starting quarterback duties in the place of previous starter and first round pick Byron Leftwich, who was cut from the team.
2008 has already been a busy year for the franchise. They have acquired the services of Jerry Porter at wide receiver, Cleo Lemon at quarterback, Troy Williamson at wide receiver and Drayton Florence at cornerback.
The Jacksonville Jaguars also give back to the community through their foundation which was established 1995. The foundation has given over $6 million to the community for youth programs, illiteracy programs, and other community and social improvement projects.
