The St. Louis Cardinals went on to win the World Series that year. In 2007, the team started off the season strong and with high expectation due to the success the team experienced in 2006. If the early part of the season was any indication, the team was in out for great year. However, they flopped down the stretch and were the first team in major league baseball history to lose a seven game lead with only 17 games left to play in the season. In 2008, the team brought in Johan Santana, who has won the Cy Young Award two times. They signed him to a $150 million dollar contract for a period of six years.
