Pittsburgh Pirates Tickets
The Pittsburgh Pirates are a professional baseball team who are a member of Major League Baseball. They were established in 1882, joined the National League in 1887 and have been a part of the Central division since 1994. The Pittsburgh Pirates have won 5 World Series.
The team that has been involved in an impressive list series of first, they were the first major-league baseball franchise to win a World Series with a home run, in 1960 in the 7th game. They were the first team to broadcast -
their games on the radio. On August 5, 1921 the team’s game was broadcast on KDKA a.m. in Pittsburgh. They also played the first World Series game at night. This occurred in 1971 at Three Rivers stadium. It was the fourth game in the World Series between themselves and the Baltimore Orioles. They won the game, and then went on to win their fourth World Series in 1971. Also, in that year, the very first lineup that consisted of entirely black players took the field on September 1st. The lineup included Dock Ellis, Rennie Stennett, Roberto Clemente, Gene Clines, Willie Stargaell, Dave Cash, Manny Sanguillen, Al Oliver and Jackie Fernandez.
Tragedy struck the club when Roberto Clemente was killed in a plane crash in December of 1972. He was helping to send supplies to help with a relief mission in Nicaragua after an earthquake. This was a devastating loss for the Pirates and also for the baseball community. At this point, Clemente had 3000 career hits. Clement was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame without having the wait the requisite amount of time. In Pittsburgh, the city named a park and bridge in his honor. They also erected a statue.
In the early 1990’s the team to begin to struggle. In fact they have failed to produce a winning season in a period of 16 years. If they fail to have a winning season in 2008-2009, then, they will break the record for most consecutive losing seasons, which is currently held by the Philadelphia Phillies.
