The Chargers have five players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They include Lance Alworth and Charlie Joiner who played wide receiver, Dan Fouts who played quarterback, Kellen Winslow who played tight end, Ron Mix who played offensive lineman, Fred Dean who played defensive end and Sid Gillman who was the team’s head coach.
2007 saw a continuation of success carried over from the 2006 season. In 2006, the team went 14-2 and were the league’s leader in a number of defensive categories, while also leading the league in scoring. After the end of 2006, the team saw several major coaching departures. Head coach Marty Schottenheimer was let go. Wade Phillips, the defensive coordinator left to be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. The team’s offensive coordinator, Cam Cameron, left as well and went on to coach the Miami Dolphins. Norv Turner was hired as Schottenheimer’s replacement.
The team would have a rough start in 2007. Their participation in the playoffs was uncertain. However, the team later found it’s groove and finished 11-5 for the season. The Chargers entered the playoffs as a wild card and won their first round game against the Tennessee Titans, 17-6. They next faced the Indianapolis Colts and won their division in a close contest that ended with a final score of 27-24. They would go on to play the New England Patriots in the conference championship, but lose with a score of 12-21.
