San Diego Padres Tickets
The San Diego Padres were founded in 1969, and they are in the National League and compete in the West division. The team became the Padres when they were named after a minor league franchise that won the Pacific Coast League title in 1937. Baseball great, Ted Williams would play on that team. The Padres joined the major-league baseball league as an expansion franchise in 1969. The Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Pilots were also
-
franchise teams that year.
The team was owned by C. Arnold Smith and he was the businessman in San Diego. The 1970’s saw three very famous and decorated players play for the Padres. They included Dave Winfield, who was an outfielder. Dave Winfield was drafted from the University of Minnesota. He never actually played in any minor league games. During that same time, he was also drafted by the Minnesota Vikings from the NFL and he was a basketball star who the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA looked to acquire as did the Utah Stars who were apart of the American Basketball Association. Winfield played over a thousand games in San Diego. He also helped the team move out from the basement of the league, to actual contenders. Randy Jones was also star doing that period, he even won the Cy Young Award in 1976. Ozzie Smith was another star who played during this time. He was extremely athletic and was an outstanding shortstop.
More recently, the team saw success when they won their division in 2000. 2007 was a little of let down after their success the year prior. The team finished 2007 with 89 wins and 73 losses. They were within one win in receiving the wild card birth for the National League, however they lost and their season ended in disappointing fashion.
