In the 1980s and 1990s, players like Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott and Steve Young dominated the football field and wowed fans. San Francisco was also once home to one of the NFL's most notorious bad boys, Terrell Owens. He was drafted by the club from the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. Eddie Debartolo was owner of the San Franciso 49er’s and was well known for treating his players well. However, Debartolo was suspended from operating the 49ers in 1999 due to an unrelated charge. Family members would run the team in his absence. After the suspension, there was a fight for control and Debartolo eventually turned over power to Jon York, who was his sister’s husband. It seemed that with Debartolo gone, the team's performance on the field suffered as well. In 1999, the team had a losing season. In 2002 they made it to the playoffs, beat the New York Giants in the first round, and then lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round. 2002 would mark the last time that the 49ers would make it to the playoffs. In 2003, Terrell Owens left the team and went on to play with the Philadelphia Eagles after much controversy. He had been the team's main receiver after Jerry Rice went to play for the Oakland Raiders.
More recently, in 2006, San Francisco ended the regular season with a losing record. This would be their fourth such season since 2002. In 2007, San Franciscos former San Francisco coach and football legend, Bill Walsh, would succumb to leukemia. The team also performed poorly on the field and ended the season with another losing record of 5-11.
