The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a member of the National Football League (NFL). They were established in 1976 and today, compete in the NFC South division. The team’s owner, Malcolm Glazer also owns one of the most popular soccer teams in the world, Manchester United, who is based in England.
The early history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers consisted of both wins and losses, but mostly losses. Things began to turn around in 1996 when Tony Dungey was hired as the head coach. -
In his first year, the team did poorly, and only won one of their first nine games. However, things picked up in the second half of the season and they went on to win five games and finished with a 6-10 record. It wasn't a great year in terms of wins, but the team’s defense known as the Tampa 2, really showed improvements. In 1997, the team greatly improved. They won their first five games. They ended the season with 10 wins and 6 losses and made the playoffs. They won their first round contest against the Detroit Lions, but would lose in the second round to the Green Bay Packers.
The team took a step back in 1998 when they finished with an 8-8 record. In 1999, the team won their division and finished with a record of 11- 5. They would beat the Washington Redskins in the divisional playoff game, but would lose to the St. Louis Rams who would go on to win the Super Bowl. Even though Tony Dungey helped the Tampa Bay Buccaneers turn things around and helped them rebuild the franchise, he was let go in 2002, after the team lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round. There were some feelings that Tony Dungey wasn't able to lead the team to the big wins, most importantly, the Super Bowl. Tony Dungey would become the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts where he did eventually win a Super Bowl.
Jon Gruden was hired to replace Tony Dundee and at a high cost. The team traded four draft picks to secure the rights to Jon Gruden’s coaching services.. The team would win the Super Bowl his first year, largely with Tony Dungey's players and defensive scheme. The following year, the Buccaneers would miss the playoffs as they also would in 2003. In fact, they ended the season with a 5-11 record. The years between 2005 and 2007 were mixed. In 2005 the team won their division, however, 2006 and 2007 were dismal years.
