Little Mermaid Tickets The Broadway musical, The Little Mermaid is based on a Disney movie that was released in 1989, with the same title. Both the musical and the movie have their bases in the book, the Little Mermaid by Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen. The musical was produced by the theatrical arm of Disney Films. The musical's first production was in Denver, Colorado in 2007. It then went on to be produced in New York. Productions stopped in 2007 and are set to open again in the early part of 2008. hit a snag when Broadway stagehands went on strike. However, the musical did resume and it’s official date of release is in January of 2008. Music was written by Alan Menken, the lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater. Doug Wright wrote the book for the musical. Francesca Zambello was the director and this was her first Broadway production, Stephen Mear is handled choreography. George Tsypin handled scenic design, Natasha Katz was in charge of lighting design and Tatianna Noginova is in charge of costume design.
The cast of for the Broadway musical included Sierra Boggess as Ariel, Prince Eric who was played by Sean Palmer, J.J. Singleton played Flounder, Titus Burgess played Sebastian Palmer Norm Lewis played King Trenton, Cody Hanford was an alternate for Flounder, Derrick Baskin played Jetson, Tyler Maynard as Flotsam and John Tracy Egan played Chef Louise.
Because so many of the Little Mermaid’s scenes take place underwater, actors and actresses were required to where footwear that was embedded with wheels. To capture the beautiful, underwater kingdom, lighting and translucent scenery was used.
Because the play is family friendly, young children and families make up a good deal of the audience. And while their response of the musical has generally been good, critics reviews have been mixed, with some liking it and others being unimpressed.
